Eyelash Growth Cycle – The Foundation of Healthy Lash Extensions

What Is the Eyelash Growth Cycle?

The eyelash growth cycle is the natural process in which lashes grow, transition, rest, and shed. This continuous cycle happens every day, often without you noticing. Because each lash is in a different stage at any given time, some level of natural shedding is completely normal.

Understanding the lash growth cycle is crucial for proper eyelash extension application. Without this knowledge, extensions may be placed incorrectly, leading to poor retention, premature fallout, or stress on the natural lash. Professional lash artists must carefully evaluate lash strength, length, and growth stage before applying extensions to ensure long-term lash health.

The 3 Stages of the Eyelash Growth Cycle

The natural eyelash cycle consists of three main stages: Anagen, Catagen, and Telogen.

    1. Anagen (Growth Stage)

The Anagen phase is the active growth stage. During this phase, natural lashes are still developing. They are typically shorter, softer, and more flexible. Because these lashes are delicate, applying heavy or overly long lash extensions can damage the follicle.

A trained lash technician will select lighter extensions for lashes in the Anagen stage to protect natural lash growth and ensure healthy retention.

    2. Catagen (Transition Stage)

The Catagen phase is a short transitional period when lash growth stops. The hair follicle begins to shrink, and the lash prepares to enter the resting stage. Lashes in this stage are more stable than in the growth phase, but retention may vary.

Understanding this stage helps explain why some lash extensions may shed earlier than others, even when properly applied.

    3. Telogen (Resting and Shedding Stage)

The Telogen phase is the final stage before a natural lash sheds. During this resting phase, the lash eventually falls out to allow new growth underneath. Losing a few natural lashes each day is part of a healthy eyelash cycle.

When a natural lash sheds, the extension attached to it will also fall. This is not a retention issue — it is a normal and healthy process.

Why Understanding the Lash Growth Cycle Matters

Knowing the natural eyelash growth cycle helps clients understand why lash refills are recommended every 2–3 weeks. It also explains why some shedding between appointments is completely normal.

When lash extensions are applied based on biological knowledge and professional standards, clients experience:

    + Better lash retention

    + Healthier natural lashes

    + Reduced risk of damage

    + Long-term, consistent results
